5 Tricks for the Maintenance of the Chain of Your Bike

The bike chain is a crucial element in the operation of our bicycle and often is not given the importance and care it requires for proper maintenance.

What two elements of our bicycle are indispensable to move forward?

Sure you have spare parts or patches for your camera, there you have one, but in case of breaking the chain of your bike Do you have a backpack?

Next, we give you five tips to try not to get to the extreme of having to remove a link from the chain for having left, or if we do, other than for not having interest in looking after it.

Here are the 5 Tips

1. Clean and grease the chain

It is not necessary to repeat this operation every time we return from an exit with the bike, but it is pertinent to keep a check on the cleaning and lubrication of the chain to avoid deteriorating it.
After an exit with water or mud (especially in MTB), when we notice that the gears do not mesh as they should or when spending time after the last revision is a real time to maintain the chain of the bike.

In the first place, it will be necessary to use a quality degreaser, which does not leave residues and that is biodegradable. The chain should be rubbed with a precise brush to remove any debris from dirt or encrusted grease.
Finally, the chain is lubricated, at this point, we find several alternatives. First, we have the wax-based lubricants, these stand out for their quick drying and will not be so sticky, so the dirt will not stick as much. Secondly Teflon based lubricants, these are more fluid, and many people prefer them for the moving parts of your bike.

2. Do not cross the chain

Rule # 1 to stop being a globe: Never carry the cross string! But what does it mean to cross the chain?

This is a situation that occurs at the moment we gear large plate and large sprocket, or small plate with the small sprocket. Particularly in the first case, the chain is strained more than desired, which (in the long run) the gap between the links expands and leads to both premature wear and eventual breakage.

3. Rest the chain when leaving the bike

If our legs rest, let the bike do it too!

Once finished our training or departure we can contribute to the health of our transmission with a simple gesture. Simply leaving the chain in a gear that does not go too tight will prevent any wear of the diverter, sprockets and chain.

4. Change the chain to the X kilometres

Every cyclist is a world, some like to pull cadence and others go more stuck with more development. Some prefer to go at a steady pace, and others are constantly changing pace.

So that the kilometres we carry with a chain can serve as personal guidance and nontransferable, but in no case is there a figure that is common for all cyclists.

So how do we know when to change the chain? Let’s go to point 5.

5. Measure wear

The chain takes up clearance as we use it, there comes a time when the gap between links grows to the point where the gears jump or do not mesh well with the teeth.

There is a specific tool for this, a gauge of the slack that the chain has. Simply insert the pins into the holes between links, if the tool does not go all the way to the bottom it means that it is still in condition, if the tool easily enters the gap we must change the chain as soon as possible.
